The city is very small but has an impressive castle nested in the nearby hill A good starting point could be walking this hill up as parking facilities closer to the castle entrance could get jammed. The historic city centre has one or two nice "cervezarias" where you could mingle with local people and have a beer with bocadillos. Alongside N-122 which is the local road that passes trough the city you will find several wineyards

Out of season Penafiel closes down.
Out of season Penafiel closes down. All restaurants close for the evening and some altogether.
There are a few interesting sites - the castle and the main square; but what is so obvious is how poor Penafiel seems despite so much wealth being generated by the wine business.

Good place to base yourself if visiting the bodegas in the area, but beware virtually everything shuts down on a Monday, which makes finding anywhere to visit and finding somewhere to eat quite challenging. Also note that many restaurants only open for lunch (usually 13-1500), and those that do serve dinner don't open until 2100!
The Castle with its wine museum is well worth visiting. Unfortunately it was all in Spanish - the App wasn't working on Apple phones when we were there. Nice tour of the Castle though.
Also worth seeing the unusual, sandy floored Plaza del Coso which is occasionally still used for bullfights.
Bodegas Pago de Carrovejas is really really worth visiting - they have superb wines & an amazing restaurant Ambivium where we had the best meal on our entire trip. You can do wine tasting on its own here - at anytime in their bar, which is great because, unlike most bodegas, you get to choose which set of wines you wish to sample - and that includes their really good wines. They also do a very good cellar tour with wine tasting and lunch (tho some may find it a little pricey).
The Bodegas Protos tour was better than the tours we did in many of the other bodegas in the area because not only was it well priced at €11, it also has a longer history than most bodegas, and it has both an old and a new winery on the same site. We had a great enthusiastic & informative guide.
If you are looking for tapas, I'd recommend Tartero on the Plaza de Espana
We will definitely be back! The location was perfect to go wine tasting as long as you have a car. It was easy to walk to restaurants in Penafiel. Esther was an amazing host, providing us with a bottle of wine upon arrival and various snacks including juices and water. She was helpful and kind in giving suggestions on what we could do in the area. The apartment was extremely clean and well furnished. Very comfortable for several nights with my spouse and my 2 dogs.
The location is perfect- ideal in fact. One can walk into town and still feel isolated from traffic noise and hubbub of the town. The Hotel is beautiful and a very calming environment with beautiful antiquities to view. The breakfast buffet very good but frantic.
The spa feature is a nice addition but plan ahead if you wish to use it-
The stay at the hotel was great. The building is beautiful, well maintained and the rooms are big. The bed was very comfortable, the bathroom had a great size and was modern. The breakfast was really good. We totally got great value for the price! Would stay there again and would recommend it for sure!
Pretty house, everything looks new, reasonably clean, quiet, really close to Penyafiel, in the middle of a vineyard with a nice little swimming pool. Even when it's hot during the day, it cools down at night. Having a kitchen and a fridge was really useful. I wish all the hotels had those.
This hotel is exceptional. It’s an excellent location, the rooms are comfortable, the staff friendly, the food is great and is very well kept. It’s been a long time since I stayed in a hotel where everything worked well. Can’t wait to go back!
It is a very special hotel and very calm and the people working there are great. Breakfast was also great, I am celiac and they had options for me. Perfect place to visit Rivera del Duero wineries.
Spacious Apartment with very good air-conditioning. There was a washer and drier in basement. Note: washer took almost 2 hours and drier about 45 minutes. Check-out time was 11:00 am
A beautiful hotel, convenient to explore Peñafiel, secure parking, reasonably priced.
We didn't eat or drink there but it was very good. Would definitely stay again.
Location is great, the hotel kept the historical interior. Breakfast is good, offering you a wide selection of dishes. Great old castle view from the room.
