The hotel is located in heavily wooded area with a lot of birds and wildlife. My wife wanted to shoot a bird called Quetzal. She had read that this property had a few Quetzals in the woods nearby. They are shy birds so they are very hard to spot. The host did help my wife to find one bird high up in the tree. Earlier that day, my wife went with another guide to spot some Quetzals, so she had a few good pictures. There is a good restaurant within a short driving distance from the property. They serve good meals at reasonable prices.

Reception area and restaurant were very well appointed and welcoming. Service and friendliness of all staff was superb. Restaurant served a great breakfast each day and hot coffee cups were kept full! Wait staff were exceptional. Grounds were beautiful and very well maintained. Lots of flowers and lots of different birds right on the grounds. The cabins were rustic but well taken care of and attractive. Our bathroom fixtures needed some repairs but it was very clean. Nice covered front porch allowed us to sit outside in the afternoons (unfortunately it rained every day from about 12 noon until dark). The sun comes up very early (5:30am) so we made the most of the first half of each day. Arranged a couple of guided tours through the hotel—Agniel was extremely good and would highly recommend him! An expert in the wildlife in the area!

This place is a bird-lover's paradise! And it's nice to feel cold sometimes in an otherwise warm, tropical country. Everyone is very nice, and very nature-oriented. The trees are all primary growth and fascinating and beautiful to see. This is one of my favorite places in Costa Rica (so far).

A magical valley, surrounded by an inimaginable amount of flora and fauna. Still a quiet place, with no massive tourism activity yet, greenery is what you will see the most. The Savegre river is astonishing, and its sound is like the perfect match to the landscape. If you are looking for a mountain/forest destination while you are here in Costa Rica, I will recommend San Gerardo de Dota.

The Quetzal valley has its own micro-climate, so its actually a lot colder and less humid than the rest of Costa Rica. You can walk everywhere, it's super safe and the river rushes near the street across some beautiful forest areas, there's no way you don't detox from city vibes in this place. The restaurants Lauraceas and Alma de Arbol are excellent, with super friendly waiters, modern menus and accesible prices. Los Lagos cabins have an awesome mountain view and are near the river, offer an excellent breakfast and are right in the centre of the valley. Bring appropriate clothing -preferably waterproof and with good hiking shoes so you get the most out of your stay regardless of the weather.

Birders paradise.
Birders paradise. This is the best place to see quetzal birds. 1 full day is enough. You must be here for a 5.30am quetzal birding tour if you want to see the quetzals. Cool- about 50° at night, 62-70° during the day.

San Gerardo de Dota has the perfect weather, it's also a very small community. Might need a bit more night life I suppose, but it's not a big deal.
Make sure you bring sunblock and warm clothes for the nights.

Great place for viewing birds. Went out early with Raul one morning. Had read great reviews about his guiding and he was wonderful, able to answer every question with ease. Highly recommend (by far the best guide of our trip). Our best sighting of quetzals and toucanets however was from the entrance to the hotel. Magnificent. Make sure you go to the humming bird garden as you get to see such a variety close up. Room was ok, nothing special but sufficiently comfortable. Food was good but not outstanding. Some lovely trails for walking.
The hotel is quite large, with a good restaurant and friendly staff. The location is ideal for bird watching in Los Quetzales National Park. The room in a double bungalow was very clean and well furnished, the balcony overlooking the pond was very nice. To get acclimated there are a few hiking trails that start right at the hotel, the pristine scenery is breathtaking. Not to be underestimated is the cool climate due to the altitude of San Gerardo (over 2000 m), in March at night 8-12 ° C and during the day for hiking very pleasant 15-20 ° C.
Love the hotel, I will continue to visit. It is my favorite in the area and being able to take my dog is alwals a plus. The hike the cold weather and the friendly staff always make my visit. Plus the go out of there way to ensure you have your needs taken care of... form contacting you with pre info... to helping set dinner reservations. And the FOOD!!!!! it was amazing!!! Remember also this hotel is the closet to the local hike entrance.
Hotel Savegre is a natural escape; the cabin where we’re staying was beautiful, super clean and surrounded by nature. waking up by the birds and the sound of the river was wonderful.
The staff of the hotel were all friendly and willing to help with whatever you need and the questions you have about the place.
Highly recommend going to the spa after taking a walk to the waterfalls!
Beautiful location, staff extremely nice, and great breakfast. We used the guide recommended by the hotel to see the quetzal.... a great moment... Furthermore, we went for the waterfall hike (a little scary but also a great moment for our trip). It's better to have a 4x4 to to come to the place because the village is a the end of a 10% slope for 8 kms (from 3070m altitude to 2300m)
The location is amazing, deep in a valley in San Gerardo de Dota, close to Los Quetzales National Park.
The unit looks like a converted container or trailer and is well equipped and comfortable.
Like others have mentioned, it does get cold at night. This was ok for us, but it was a huge (and welcome) contrast to the searing heat on the Osa Peninsula.
It's a lovely place with nice accommodations, a beautiful area with their own forrest, waterfall and pond on hotel's property. The pond could be seen from our room, and the sound of Savegre river lulled our sleep at night. Consider the temperature is considerably cooler than most of Costa Rica's destinations, so bring your raincoats and jackets.
The hotels strongest points were the people, the garden courtyard outside of our rooms and the restaurant. We saw a quetzal on three occasions in 2 days. The hiking was very nice and the trails were well taken care of. This was the first bar I went to in Costa Rica with a Negroni on the cocktail menu. Well done and thanks it was good!
The location, at the bottom of a valley, is sublime. A clear river runs next to it and many plants and flowers adorn the hotel grounds in a wonderful way. The arrangement of the rooms and the water features is beautiful. The bar and its decoration is another nice place, as is the restaurant.
I have traveled Costa Rica extensively and Lauraceus has the Best breakfast of any hotel I have frequented. The food at their restaurant is always so delicious and the cleanliness is top notch ! The room is ample and the bes are super comfy. The design of their rooms is beautiful .
The road to the hotel is perfectly doable with a 2wd, sometimes a few potholes or a bit steep. But nothing to worry about. Don't get the negative reviews about that... The restaurant was good. The room was good with a nice shower and a view over the beautiful garden
Hotel Suria is a great place to stay, the staff is suuuuuper nice and they were there to help in anything we requested. The hotel is pet friendly, and this makes a total difference when traveling with a pet, to see a staff so involved.
Casa Monge is charming, we got to see a quetzal and walk along the river. Plus it’s close enough to Savegre Hotel, where we got to see the millennial oak tree in the oak trail. Anthony is really kind and a wonderful host.
Very friendly and helpful owner.
Big and very clean room.
Very nice terrace with a nice view in the forest. A lot of hummingbirds, toucanlets and other birds at the hotel.
Close to different restaurants and cafe's.
Such a lovely experience in this quiet gem of a hotel. The staff was welcoming and the room clean and comfortable. They provided a delicious breakfast. I would come back in a heartbeat!
Quaint little casita in San Gerardo de Dota. Simple room with only the necessities. Beautiful property. Delicious breakfast. Very friendly and helpful staff.
