Colourful and historic, modern and colonial, local and touristic, Cartagena de Indias represents one of the liveliest Colombian beach resorts. Its character mixes cultures and peoples, including natives, Spanish, African and Arab. Its rich legacy granted its Old Town the recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
When the Spanish founded the city in 1533, the region had already been inhabited for thousands of years. It became an important port for the Spanish gold and a significant political centre. Echoes of those times can be seen throughout the historic centre, in the city walls, the San Felipe de Barajas Castle, and the colourful streets and colonial squares. Some of the best hotels in Cartagena de Indias can be found here.

Cartegena has so much culture and history. The food was fantastic! There is live music in every restaurant and bar. Traditional dancing can be found in the squares and you just need to tip. Just be aware of all the street hustlers, especially the rappers who will follow you. The old town comes alive after 8pm. Be prepared for the 90-100% humidity during the mid-day. It is best to site see early in the morning or evening and siesta or pool lounge during the mid day.

The "Old City" is beautiful and historic - and has excellent gelato! Unfortunately, no Dr Pepper...
The beaches are good, and provide a diversion (or a primary reason to go, if you are young) and a completely different atmosphere.

Lots to do if you work with local tourist agents.
Lots to do if you work with local tourist agents. Leave the area and go to Baru for glowing plankton or boats to Rosario archipelago. Old town. Watch out for street vendors selling trinkets and being too pushy.

A lot of great food options, best seafood in Colombia.
A lot of great food options, best seafood in Colombia.
Our favorites:
- La Cevicheria
- La Mulata
- Cafe del Mar ( bit pricey for what it is, but worth it for the sunset drinks )
- El baron ( great tapas in the middle of the square )
Town with a rich history and lots of important landmarks and sights to visit. Great colonial architecture, colorful streets and lively people.
It is very touristic, with a lot of locals non stop trying to sell/push tours/restaurants and goods on the street, felt a bit like India sometimes. There are great street performances of dance groups and artists happening, which i enjoyed a lot though!

Great place to visit as long as you don't mind being harrassed non stop by street vendors trying to sell you hats, cigars, sunscreen, tchotchkes and other things, having menus constantly thrown in your face or being honked at by multiple cab drivers if you stop on a sidewalk for even a second wanting to know if you need a ride. Everything worth seeing in Cartagena can be seen in one day, two tops if you want to see some places out side the city

The host was very informative about everything which I really liked, the hotel was really nice and clean, same as our room, the views were spectacular from our room. Security was on top of everything making sure we were good with everything. We walked to the historic city which was about 15-20 min walk from the hotel which wasnt bad at all. Even though theres a shopping mall right next door with theres also a convenient store exactly 1 block behind the hotel, which was really good to know. I highly recommend this place if you visit Cartagena.
Beautiful boutique hotel in Getsemani and only a short walk from the old city. Getsemani is an absolute must visit - we almost enjoyed it more than the old city! The hotel had a lovely rooftop pool and bar and the rooms were fantastic.
The staff were all incredible - particularly Jhonatan on the front desk who went above and beyond to help us, with nothing being too much trouble. He helped us with local recommendations and organising trips to the islands - we can’t thank him enough for making our stay so special!
The host was really lovely and the 2 little dogs were so sweet! It is right across the street from a huge plaza but you would never know until you get to the door as there’s huge walls all around it. The house is on a really safe and quiet street but in close walking distance to everything!
This is a private room in the owners house, not a hostel or a hotel. We didn’t realise this when we booked but it turned out great!
The hotel was in a very convenient location in a walking distance from both the Old City and the Getsemani area (~10 minutes walk). It’s also close to the port from where the boats are leaving to Rosario Islands. The room was clean and quite big, and the staff were very friendly. The hotel has a restaurant and a swimming pool bar, which we did not use but maybe helpful to know.
The room was really lovely, staff was supportive, the little pool on the roof was refreshing, the location was just perfect, simple, but tasty breakfast, very quite place in a busy street, super comfortable beds, fresh water available, the green program. I give 10, as this was the nicest hotel in Colombia we had.
Excellent customer service from day 1 to day 7. The rooms are excellent and the front desk was very attentive of our requests throughout the stay. Greta breakfast and the hotel is one block from the beautiful beach of Cartagena. Price was really good for the location and amenities of this hotel. Lo recomiendo.
Staff were very welcoming and willing to help with any request. Location was excellent being in the heart of the old city.
At night in the bedroom, once the lights were turned off the room was very dark which made for a great night sleep after many other hotels with glaring light shining in all night.
The breakfast was really good at Hotel Kartaxa. The staff was friendly and eager to help with luggage or any questions we had. The location is amazing right in the middle of the old city, with loads of restaurants, bars, a market, and a beautiful mall all within walking distance.
This is the best place to stay in Cartagena. Beautiful resort facilities and exceptional staff. Quality is at a premium. The hotel has beach access - though that comes with hawkers - and a water slide and other pool facilities for children. Good gym and fabulous breakfast.
Beautiful boutique hotel, with excellent breakfast and comfortable rooms, very close to Plaza de la Trinidad; small rooftop pool and jacuzzi. Stored our luggage for a number of days in the hotel when we went hiking in Tayrona National Park.
This hotel is located right next to Plaza Fernandez de Madrid which is buzzing with energy any time of the day. The staff were super friendly and my room was nice and spacious. The lady who served breakfast was very sweet!
The location is VERY good - just outside Getsemani main plaza. It is a very touristic and crowded area though the hotel is not too noisy and I slept well. also the rooms are very spacious and the air conditioning is good.
The hotel is very well located in the old city, the room was confortable and clean. The breakfast was very good, with a lot of choices. The receptionist was kind and helpful.
Nice swimming pool on the rooftop.
After seeing hotels all around the world and in Colombia this hotel just gets it. They understand what is important to their guests. Great value to money. If I ever come Cartagena again I would stay here.
If you want to stay in a traditional small hotel, this is the place; light sunny, peaceful and airy and being just outside the walls and tourist madness of the old city, make it a perfect location.
Very nice hotel in the center of Cartagena. Two small swimming pools but very appreciated. The breakfast is really good and the waiter is great. We loved this place
Loved decor and finishings in entire hotel. Room was large. Body wash and lotion were really good quality. Perfect location to walk to and from old city.
