I lived in Mar del Plata for almost 10 years until I moved out. It's a wonderful city, with nice beaches and a good range of options for activities to do.
I'd say it's one of the most popular places to go for vacations during summer. Probably the reason behind it it's the history and its short distance to Buenos Aires. It has the perfect blend between a big city, and nature.
If you are thinking to go to the city just because of the beach and nothing else, then I'd suggest to look for a less crowded and cheaper option, which will probably has a better beach as well, like Necochea.

Mar del Plata is Argentina's premiere beach resort city. Besides its road along the coast that offers wonderful views, it has lots of good restaurants, a world-famous casino, many beaches, a walking sidewalk that runs along the coast, etc. The best times to visit are during the Southern Hemisphere spring and summer months but get a little crowded in the months of December and January. The worst months are the winter months when it is cold.

Mar del Plata is a coastal town that is always ready to welcome tourists. Ir is beautiful even on stormy days.
There are many thibgs to do here and many places to visit. The beaches are stunning, especially those close to the harbour. Its nightlife is also worth mentioning. There are many theatres and restaurants that suit all tastes and...pockets!

Thank you Luis and Nancy for your hospitality. We truly enjoyed your accommodation. The attention to detail didn't go un noticed. My profession for over 40 years was in Hotels and resorts, so I feel my opinion should speak for itself because I notice everything. Barry and I travel the world around 7 months a year so we have rented lots of places. This was our first trip to Argentina but we traveled by bus all over for 80 days.
If you are looking for a home away from home either a few days or weeks, we highly recommend here.
We liked everything, starting from the style and finishing with other beautiful details like the patio and especially the grill! The place is brand new, has everything necessary for cooking and showering. You can see how the place was prepared for welcoming guests with love and attention. The managers are always in touch for any questions. The area is out of the noisy center which is a must during the high season. 2 min away from the beach. What else you can ask for? Highly recommended!
An excellent place to stay in Mar del Plata. The location is great, the stuff is friendly and nice, the room was quiet, the sheets and blanket were clean. The breakfast, as people noticed here already, only suggests sweet pastry (with coffee/tea and juice), but for me it was enough, and, by the way, the medialunas were fresh and very delicious.

The hotel is very nice and seems to cater to the elderly crowd as the guests were primarily over 65yrs. The pool area is great and the spa is very nice. It doesn't seem like it's a popular area to travel if you are not Argentine.

The host was very kind, the apartment was clean and cozy and safe with a beautiful view. There are plenty of shops, cafes etc in the area and the beach is a 10-15 min walk away. We felt very welcome
