Vollenhove is a cute little city. There is ample shopping within a five minute walk of the house. The place is excellent for exploring the wider surroundings. Zwolle is a great city at about a half hour drive. There are also lots of other nice destinations nearby, like Kampen, Urk, Lemmer, and all kinds of beautiful watery landscapes (rivers, IJsselmeer, polderlandscapes, peat extractions etc.) giving you a historic crash course in how-to-build-the-netherlands.
