There’s simply no way for me to adequately tell you how extraordinary my week-long stay at Canaima House turned out to be in the space available here. The backdrop for my stay was unfortunately a deeply sad one as I had come to Ireland from the US for the funeral of my little sister. She passed away suddenly a few days before I arrived and I came across Canaima’s listing in the chaotic scramble to arrange the trip. Spoiler Alert: From the very moment I arrived (they gladly allowed me to check-in early) to the last minute I was there (when host Tom rose before 4am to cook me a hefty breakfast and see me off), I was wrapped in a blanket of kindness and compassion. Both Tom and the marvelously effervescent Mily could not have extended me more empathy and grace if they’d been my own family. I share this with you because I believe that many of you are also more impressed by the connections you make with your hosts than with more superficial things. The property itself is gorgeous, the rooms are very comfortable and lovely; as is the entire house and its grounds! Canaima sits on a twisty country road that may be a little tight for walking, but Ladysbridge, where the house is located, is very near to several charming small towns, like Midleton, where you’ll find pubs, restaurants and shops that cater to locals rather than tourist hordes. Surrounding Canaima on all sides is the farmland that’s still in Tom’s family. He’s lovingly built a delightful patio where you can read a book, watch the birds that come to Tom’s feeder or perhaps make a wish in the cozy fairy garden he’s got in a stony corner. If this sounds too glowing to be believable, I can say that before my visit, I would have been skeptical too. But at an especially painful time, I was blessed to find a couple and a home that embraced me as if I was family. If you value human connection and simple decency, you will never find a more rewarding place to stay than Tom and Mily’s Conaima House.
