When you first drive into Labasheeda, you cannot help but thinking that this might be the literal and of the world (peninsulas sometimes give you that impression, I guess). However, when we found our temporary home then, met our lovely host and later her two dogs, we could not help but falling in love with that small village, which seems fallen out of time in a very good way. The friendliness of the people is only surpassed by the friendliness of all the dogs we met there. Obviously, nobody needs watchdogs in Labasheeda and this is a good thing, isn’t it? In the pub (you can’t really miss “Caseys” on the Main Street but you need to know that you have to pass a hallway right beside the small store to get in), the locals told us about the families who have lived there for generations and their struggles to keep the town alive with people getting older or finding jobs far away from Labasheeda (actually, one fellow we chatted with went as far as Perth, Australia). On the other hand, locals returned from far away and created new businesses like the wonderful “Charm Bee”, a family run pottery painting studio and café. Down at the local pier, we could witness a young horse changing hands like they must have done it for hundreds of years at this exact place … Traditions that connect the past, present and future. The land is old, too. The small roads connecting the properties, the old farms, lots of (friendly) cows and a beautiful landscape need to be mentioned, too, to make this brief review complete. So, things move along and Labasheeda is neither literally nor metaphorically the end of the world, it is just a wonderful place to visit. Go there, bring some time and find something that has become rare these days: rest and time to contemplate.
