Trigony House Hotel and Garden Spa, hotel in Dunscore

Once a shooting lodge, Trigony House Hotel and Garden Spa is a dog-friendly accommodating offering a relaxed atmosphere.

The breakfast was the best I have ever eaten. I have eaten many breakfasts, some of them in hotels much swankier and more expensive than this. This blew them all out of the park. From the home made granola with stiff organic yoghurt to the freshly baked bread with home made jam and the best marmalade I've tasted to the delicious full Scottish with unbelievably creamy scrambled eggs, I cannot praise this breakfast enough. I'm very sad that I was not able to finish it, just due to the generous quantities, as that meant I needed to stop eating it. There were lots of other good things too. There were yummy home baked biscuits in the room, and also a map of a walk you could do right from the hotel (which we did, and it was a good walk). The staff were friendly and attentive without being annoyingly persistent, which is a hard balance to strike. The hotel itself is beautiful, and there's a lovely lounge with squishy sofas to sit on. Our room was comfy and cosy. Dinner was also delicious. It was just great. Go stay.

Very quiet location. Lovely having the living room for somewhere to relax once my daughter was asleep! They left a big box of toys out for her too.

Rivendell, hotel in Dunscore

Rivendell is a striking Arts and Crafts mansion, set just 15 minutes' walk from the town centre of Dumfries and its railway station. It features rooms with antique furnishings and free WiFi.

The rooms were a good size and clean. The beds were a little soft for my liking, but not too soft. Breakfast was excellent and the staff polite and helpful. There was free parking at the rear of the building.

It was quiet and perfect. I noted that it was accessible for my friend and her wheelchair so I may book again and take her with me. Most enjoyable.

The location was brilliant. The roads in the area, although minor, are in very good condition and very quiet. The views from the living room are fantastic. The bedroom enormous. The furniture etc very tasteful and the layout perfect. The heating was good when needed, but the bungalow is generally a very warm building. The sheep were beautiful. This place is as faraway from the mad world you can get, and yet relatively easy to get to, and then when you get back to the mad, mad world relish the memory.

We were surrounded by sheep, dogs, chickens and ducks, red kites circling above. Situated on a rise there were views across the valley, darkness and quiet at night. The stone built cottage was warm and the beds comfortable. The kitchen is small but well thought through.

We were welcomed by Simon as soon as we arrived. The cottage was spacious and had everything in it we needed. The beds were very comfortable, and the cottage was extremely clean. We were encouraged to see the lambs, sheep, pony, chickens, and dogs, which my boys absolutely loved. The scenery and views are exceptional, and we had a lovely, quiet weekend away. We would definitely recommend a stay here, and we'll definitely be back.

It was a very rural situation, great if you like sheep outside your bedroom window. Great hosts and I was given a lovely afternoon tea both days and had my own sitting room.
