Hotel Maya Balam, hotel in Xpujil

Hotel Maya Balam is located in Xpujil. Featuring a restaurant, the 3-star hotel has air-conditioned rooms with a private bathroom.

The hotel is affordable. It's great that they have a restaurant which is open all day from breakfast till dinner. The restaurant staff was helpful, they also warmed a bottle of milk for our daughter before bedtime. Of course we came to visit Calakmul, which is still >1 hour away, but there's just not many options to stay somewhere closer.

Ecohabitat, hotel in Xpujil

Providing inner courtyard views, Ecohabitat in Xpujil features accommodations and a garden. With garden views, this accommodation offers a patio.

We had such a great stay at Ecohabitat in Xpujil! Our favourite stop yet on our Mexican road trip. Breakfast was awesome and is included! We got the choice of quesadilla or eggs and everything comes with fruit and toast and coffee or tea. Always served on time and delicious. Room was very clean and tidy and staff were friendly and helpful. Big shoutout to Jorge who was our lovely receptionist, maintenance man, cleaner, and server. He was kind enough to unlock our room at 9:30pm after I accidentally locked us out. Hotel is along a major trucking route, but the hotel makes this very clear and it wasn’t a surprise. Pretty much everywhere along this route has been affected by the Tren Maya construction. Noise was covered up by A/C which was awesome. Private parking is a great bonus. Such a cute place and great access to Calakmul. We also loved the covered patio and spent evening out there listening to the crickets.

The cabin was spacious, practical, and fun. The water pressure was good in the shower, coffee pot worked well, and the bed was comfy. The trail through the jungle is awesome- I saw three spider monkeys and lots of birds and lizards. Really beautiful and well done. It seems like this place is expanding and being made with care.

It is well placed for some fascinating archaeology.

It is well placed for some fascinating archaeology. But you need to be up for a "half horse" town. To get to a basic restaurant we walked through the middle of roadworks. Most roads giving access to the hotel were closed for road works and of course there are no diversions..you just work it out! But the archaeology is fabulous though to get to Calakmul was a 3 hour drive each way .

Beautiful site right off the road.

Beautiful site right off the road. Walk to the Mirador Maya Hotel. The grounds are beautifully maintained, and as of September, 2023, you can climb everything. There's no pyramid, but the main structure is very tall and impressive. Bring bug spray. The mosquitoes are pretty intense.

Xpujil itself is not worth visiting.

Xpujil itself is not worth visiting. It is a good town to stay if you are travelling trough the area (for example when visiting Calakmul) and need a place to sleep. There is a small supermarket and a nice pizza restaurant. Be aware that there are only two banks and their ATM's at the time of our visit both of them did not have any money in them for two days.

Xpujil is located more or less at the center of the Calakmul...

Xpujil is located more or less at the center of the Calakmul municipality (which is large). Although this little town is not particularly oriented towards tourism, it is the best location to stay connected & have all services within easy reach so you can move between main sites and attractions around the Calakmul area. Near Xpujil you will find from four to six striking archaeological sites and all of them are worth the visit. Of course, the most impressive one is Calakmul but there is plenty to do beyond that outstanding stop. For instance, you can ask a cab to take you to "Ejido 20 de Noviembre" and visit plenty of craft workshops (wood carving, embroidery by hand and by machine among others). I really enjoyed my visit to Hilos de Vida, Amanecer de Rio Bec & Artesanos Sabios since they give you a nice explanation on their crafts and sometimes they even offer a class for you to take (they also can get you a guide if you need translation aid). Whether you are traveling with family, couple or by yourself, I really recommend to book no less than two nights in Casa Ka'an (about 8 to 10 minutes by car near Xpujil), 'cause they have everything you expect and a little bit more in a really cute jungle lodge composed by very independent villas which happen to be surrounded by the most wonderful environment. Needless to say that a chat with the manager (Nicolás) is always enlightening so if you catch him ask for his views on the area. Last but no least... you will boost your experience in the region if you move around in a 4WD or even better in your own bike.

Not a lot of options for housing around the Calakmul...

Not a lot of options for housing around the Calakmul Biosphere. None are really close and you need a vehicle to get to the main part of the park. Xpujil, is little neighborhood town, not too close to ruins or highway. We enjoyed walking around town and looking at birds and the old frame houses.

Our only reason for staying in Xpujil was to visit Calakmul.

Our only reason for staying in Xpujil was to visit Calakmul. But as it turns out, it is not the closest lodging to go to the ruins. Conhuas is nearer and has a few hotels that would have worked better for our itinerary, since we were going west. The town of Xpujil has very little of interest and the meal we had was one of the least successful of our trip. We ate dinner at Sazon Veracruzana, sitting right on the dusty noisy main road (186) that runs through the town. It had the more favorable reviews in LP. Calakmul was a great experience though!

One of the closest hotels and villages to Calakmul, which is how we found the place to stay, still about 1 hour drive to the entrance at night. Xpujil has their own little archeological site and Becan is close by as well. In the village you find some shops, bakeries and taquerias. Try to go by the furniture manufacturer Adolfo and his father they make fantastic furniture (unfortunately most of them too big to take with us, we got some small souvenirs made of wood instead). Great grilled chicken, see pictures.

we really enjoyed our stay at casa Maran. we booked it because we wanted to visit Calakmul which is really easy from Xpujil on. The hotel is really close from the ADO bus station so that was perfect. When we arrived at the hotel the employees tried to help us find a guide to do the Calakmul tour in any way possible. They made sure we had the best tour ever! We especially want to thank Javier for his help that day and his kindness, we enjoyed our stay and visit to Calakmul even more because of you!

We loved staying here, we even extended our stay by one night. The owner is really friendly and helpful, and the general vibe is great. Decent pool and a nice little restaurant with a wide selection. Our room was very big with great shower. I liked the quiet location away from Xpujil, great value for money, and it's a good base to explore the area. If you are looking for a bit of a hike, go to Hormiguero, there are some trails next to the ruins. Also, Becan and Chicana are worth visiting.

The room was very comfortable, had a kitchenette and patio with hammocks, good wifi. I highly recommend a trip to see the Volcan de los Murcielagos. About 25 minutes west every evening at around 6PM, a highlight of my Mexico trip this time. Guide was 75 pesos, about $4 US! The drive to Calakmul was very long, 1.5 to 2 hours each way from Xpujil. Calakmul is impressive but barely worth the drive. The highlights were spider monkeys and an ocelated turkey.

Stayed here two nights in order to get to Calakmul Ruins. The hotel is exactly what it needs to be. An affordable comfortable place with a store nearby and restaurant attached. The room was small and the grounds were basic but that was perfect for us because it keeps the price low. Also the staff helped to organize a car to get to the ruins the next day which was invaluable! The wifi was strong enough to work from.

Our room was basic but clean & comfortable. Appreciated having the rooftop terrace for breakfast & chilling out in the afternoons. A convenient place to stay for visiting the Rio Bec sites. However Xpujil has become a very dusty truckers town due to the construction of the Maya train. Accidently walked into two brothels but quickly walked back out again! We did find two reasonably good places to eat.

Xpujil can easily be used for excursions to Calakmul, Becan (a must!), Xpujil ruins (easy walk), Mayan village for arts and crafts ("20e noviembre"), jungle tours... Ask friendly reception for guide etc. We stayed 3 nights and didn't regret it. You could easily fill 3 days in the area. Hotel is simple but cozy. Check the market in town and several places to eat.

For a hotel locateded somewhat away from (touristic) civilization the staff was able to talk english quite well and they were friendly (bonus: the waiter in the evening is a magnificent cocktail maker) If you want a couple of nights in the "jungle", hear all kinds of animals and no city/car noices this is the perfect place. But don't forget mosquito spray!

Very calm location in a secluded forest. The village Xpujil can be quite noisy due to the many trucks taht are crossing the village on the main road. The Cabañas Aldea Maya (actually just one recently finished, another one under construction and some planned) offererd everything we needed during our stay. We highly reccomend it for couples.

There are not many options in Xpujil to reach Calakmul and this is a practical and economical option. They can help you book transport or a tour to Calakmul directly there, for a good price as it seems is negotiable since in our transport everybody paid something different.
