We liked the Maya Museum the best. Chetumal is the capital of Quintana Roo state, but it is not a large city. It is a good overnight stop on the way between Cancun and Palenque.
Playa del Carmen is awesome! We picked this place to be our base out here in Quintana Roo since we were going to be traveling to Cancun and Tulum and since it's a mid way point we stayed here for 6 nights! Should of stayed a couple more days! During our stay in playa we would go down 5ta avenida where all the restaurants and bars are at (downtown) and had lunch and dinner there just a few steps from the beach. One of the places we went more than onces was Los Hijos De Las Tostadas, great seviche there for sure! We went out to mamitas beach club witch was decent but only place we found where they had music at the beach. We also took a ferry to Cozumel and went diving! Playa also has a night life we went to La Vaquita and abolengo, we chose these clubs over mandala and coco bingo because they were way cheaper and much better music. We then went to mandala to see what all the hype was about and left disappointed.
This city is a shame, a shame as the capital of Quintana Roo. The streets in very bad conditions, lights not working properly, lots of garbage all around, everything seems old and broken. A feel of insecurity all around. Definitely my last time in this city.
You need at least two days to enjoy Bacalar. It is simply a dream. If you are traveling around Quintana Roo, this place is a must. If you love nature , go.
Playa del carmen is ideal if you want the exact balance between nature, beuaty, and confort. Different and more personal than cancun, since you a in a small town, but nicer than tulum. Playa del carmen is close to everything touristic in quintana roo, it is a great point to stay to avoid the long drives either from cancun or tulum. If you buy in 5ta avenida, beware that everything is much more expensive than in the rest of the town, thou the places are really beautiful, in most of the cases worth of the extra paying. The beach is quite good, but not as good as the ones in tulum, at the begining of playa car (coming from cancun) are the best ones. There are lots of parks to visit, lot of nature, lot of fun, lot of everything, don't miss this place!
Two weeks in the Yucatan/Quintana Roo and Cozumel was definitely my favourite out of all the places we visited. The island itself is beautiful, very picturesque and it is also easy to get to from the mainland. We spent two days snorkeling/on the beach and the water was the cleanest we'd seen so far. The best part of my whole holiday was snorkeling on Cozumel as even in the shallowest water there are lots of fish and we got loads of great pictures and videos. In the evening it is also a fun place to eat out in and go for a walk as the atmosphere is really relaxed and there are some bars and authentic restaurants. We only stayed two nights and spent both of them at Los Otates. I really recommend it, both for the food and for the extremely friendly staff, especially the bartender Omar who makes amazing margaritas, including his own recipe with a hint of chilli. The only criticism I have of Cozumel is that during the day you can't walk for people trying to sell you something or drag you in their shops. It's completely different to the evening when everything is a lot more chilled.
Cancun is basically the Las Vegas of Quintana Roo. You don't get much of a taste for Mexico, though there are things to do and the many all-inclusive hotels make planning a vacation super simple. If what you mostly want is to go between pool and beach, then Cancun is fine.
This is the hidden gem on the Yucatan/Quintana Roo coastline. If you want droves of crowds and alcohol-fueled action, go to Cancun. If you want to simply relax and enjoy the beauty and tranquility of Mexican island life, come to Isla Mujeres...you can always thank me later. Without a doubt, make reservations at Olivia's...and, although you may not need reservations, be sure to check out Polo's Mango Café and Rooster's (for breakfast).
It is a capital of Quintana Roo - the #1 tourist state in Mexico. Though most people are crowded around Cancun and Rivera Maya, Chetumal has its fare share of interesting things to explore, a lot can be learned about Mexican history and history of Maya visiting Chetumal museums, there are beautiful Mayan sites easily accessible by car and gorgeous lake of Bacalar is near by. There are beaches, boating, Xcalac and Mahahual are not too far, great food, nice people (not much English speaking though). Chetumal is right on the border with Belize which is as well hugely popular for tourism! I live in Belize and highly recommend visiting both - Southern Q. Roo and Belize!
I cannot say enough about our travels in Quintana Roo, the Mayan people are some of the hardest working people I have encountered in travels they really want you to enjoy your stay. The areas archeological sites, variety of birds and beaches provides something for everyone.
Easily the best place to stay if you are in Quintana Roo. It is too bad that we only had two nights booked, but it was the best hotel experience we've ever had. The breakfast was simply amazing and rich. The restaurant was really delicious. They also had a private cenote which was a great addition to the overall experience. I would highly recommend having a rent-a-car if you are staying here, as this is the only convenient way of transportation (in Quintana Roo in general). We would definitely stay here next time we are in Quintana Roo.
I was reading a lot of feedback about a beach in Catalonia Royal and yes - definitely this is the best beach I have been to in Mexico so far in Quintana Roo - turquoise water in high sargasso season (no sargasso there). Great is also you can book catamaran trip which I really loved (thank you for it;)). Food is fantastic as you can choose daily from several restaurants - favorite was an Italian one with the best pizza in the world. I enjoyed a lot all animals living in the garden under apartments part.
We found Puerto Morelos to be a pleasant first stop on our Yucatan Peninsula journey, and our stay at Yax Kiin was an integral part of our sense of the town. A short walk from the beach, the hotel offered easy access to tasty restaurants & a morning run around town. Should we make a return trip to Quintana Roo, we would likely stay longer in Puerto Morelos, since it avoids the hustle & bustle of Cancun & Playa del Carmen.
Tulum
We know this side of Mexico very well. And I can honestly say that this is one of the most peaceful, well taken care of areas of Quintana Roo. The apartment seems to be brand new, and is clean. The beaches here are some the prettiest of the region.
Clean. Spacious. Friendly. The hotel office is basic amenities and is very well located on a main road just outside of town probably one of the better hotels in this small town in Quintana Roo.
The beach was awesome. Great seevice
Overall great vibe and service. Really good location.
Muy lindo el hotel, la comida y el personal!
Staff very nice, excellent food, nice place
The architecture design, nice staff.
The staff is exceptional! Truly elevated our entire stay. Beautiful views from the hotel's restaurant. Great access to the beach. Easy to get around with the bus stop located just outside of the hotel. But really, what sets apart Emporio is the people - always the kindest, most prompt service. Highly recommend for your next stay in the area.
I love PPP for its concept and originality. Cabins, casitas, villas are built inside the jungle. Staying at one of them is one-of-the-kind experience. WiFi is surprisingly available all over the property, even at the beach front. I enjoyed many activities including hiking the walking path from one end to the other, and daily yoga, which is located right at the ocean front. My favorite PPP moment was eating breakfast in the early morning while watching the soft sunrise lights up the beach club area. The picture from this scenery is lovely.
The beach was absolutely amazing. It was really sandy and I felt no rocks! There are also plenty of loungers by the beach. The staff was amazing. They are all super helpful and friendly. Our room was cleaned well each day and they swept the sandy floors! The pool was very large and not crowded which was nice as well.
the location and the views were out of this world
everything was excellent service
Real Paradise to my wife and me, amazing experience for silver anniversary.
