Fantastic location. Staff were very helpful. Breakfast was good - there was a separate toaster for gluten free bread though it wasn't obvious which bread was actually gluten free.

I spent a night/day here on an October weekend with my boyfriend. We took the #12 ferry from Slussen in Stockholm to the Norra Svartso stop both ways. Luckily, the weather was great, which let us take advantage of the beautiful island! We rented bikes and helmets from our hostel (STF Svartso) and biked around the island! Because it's not tourist season, restaurants and cafes were closed, so we ate both breakfast and lunch at the hostel. This was a beautiful place to visit, very bikeable and walkable, and I would highly recommend this place for people who love natural scenery and spending time outside!

A surprisingly enjoyable island not far from Stockholm.
A surprisingly enjoyable island not far from Stockholm. It's a good compromise between civilization and tranquility, with only a couple of small villages over a larger area, the rest being covered by forest and vegetation.
If you want to avoid the people and immerse yourself in nature, you need to go off the beaten path. It's unfortunate that a lot of the island seems to be walled off by private properties.
You can rent a bike either at the southern dock or the northern hostel, and it is the recommended method of transportation.
There are 2 restaurants on the island, and between them I recommend the one closer to the hostel. Less crowded, good food and service.
There aren't many activities to do normally, so I would recommend to bring your own. In the summer there's a cultural festival (in the middle of July) and you can join the locals in dancing, concerts and other stuff.
Last thing to mention: bring anti-mosquito lotion. Lots of it.
