The main gateway to Danube delta is a small city with a pregnant post-communist look, bland and chaotic architecture. And the aggressive corruption of the administration did little to help.
However I'm glad I went and I encourage anyone to do so because Tulcea still has things to offer. The city itself can be rounded in a day and the main places to go are Casa Avramide, one of the few period building left, beautifully restored and containing a nice art collection, notably EUGENIU BARĂU's paintings-complex and full of humor. Still on the art side the Art Museum offers a good selection of romanian artists. Then the Aquarium is a perfect place for grownups and kids. Those are very close togheter.
For an epic panorama of the city and the river Monumentul Eroilor is 15 minutes walk from the center and I recommend the sunset. Going back down the hill you can continue on the waterfront promenade and at the end, by the trainstation you can circle Lacul Ciuperca (Mushroom Lake). At one of the city exits there is a fishermen village I did not visit and for 2025 a big aqua park will open.
But the main attraction is the surrounding area that you can visit in day trips if you set camp in the city or around. Delta is a universe in itself and you have many options from a few hours boat trips to overnight stays or even longer for fishing, water sports etc. If you like hiking or endurance biking Macin Mountains nature reserve are just 40 minutes by car. On the south east the lakes and the ancient fortress of Enisala, Hystria or Argamum can make another day trip.
If you reached this point you desrve to try the great fish food of the area. There are surely a lot of places to eat but I suggest caution and asking your local host for recommendations. "Storceag" is a delicious sturgeon broth (borsch) I tried for the first time and I crave now.
Around the mountains there are a few notorious vineyards to check too but I'm not an expert.

Favorite places: Danube Delta museum, Ivan Patinkin esplanade, one day trip to Danube Delta
There are several restaurants (mainly sea food and fishes) around but we preferred self catering.
Yes, it is easy to get around Tulcea by boat or by car.
To be avoided: week end and legal holidays.

Tulcea is my hometown, so I know a thing or two about it.
Tulcea is my hometown, so I know a thing or two about it. It generally has the same feel of many similar towns in Romania, being greatly affected by the Communist and the post-Revolution years. However, it does have some charm of its own. The Danube promenade is one of the nicest in Romania and it's slowly getting even better. The view from the "monument" (there are several in town, but only one is known as "The" monument) are quite impressive, especially at sunrise and sunset. There are several museums that will help you discover the region and - of course - Tulcea is the gateway to the Danube Delta, which is a marvel in itself, although people don't respect it as they should (but that's true about everything in Romania).
There are many places where you can go for good food, I'll name a few that I've tried: Santa Catalina, The Pub Grill House, Trident, but there are plenty of other options. Getting around is quite easy, since Tulcea is a fairly small town and taxis are cheap-ish. Local transport is a decent option. While generally safe, being careful never hurt anyone and it's probably better to avoid some of the darker streets at night.
The Mia apartment is a sensational find.
It is modern, very comfortable, and superbly appointed as you would be in your own home.
parking is available next to apartment.
Host is receptive and welcoming, greeted us in person and gave us local tips especially since we came in late and needed information on tours to the delta the next day.
In fact, we like it so much we stayed another night especially since the place is so relaxing and comfortable.
The whole compound was so lovely with the traditional architectural features. The hosts Vali and Jetta made it like a home away from home. They were such kind hosts and they drove me to the bus station when I left. They also cooked the most delicious fish soup. Vali had a motorized rubber boat and he knew what he was doing very well. He knew where to take guests to see the birds and the ecosystem of the delta. Amazing value. Recommend to anyone.
We loved our stay in this rustic family run hotel. The cooked omelette breakfast was delicious as was the grilled fish at night. One daughter speaks excellent English and is happy to chat. They have a boat and took us out for a lovely relaxing day on the beautiful Danube Delta. Everything provided was very good value for money. Totally recommend treat yourself and visit this delightful area.
The room and guesthouse were beautiful and very quirky. The host was lovely and so welcoming, offering us help on everything, from parking to contacts for our next stay should we need them. Most people use Tulcea as a one night stop for the Delta but Casa Trandafirilor is a reason to stay longer to enjoy the house, garden and hospitality of the hosts. If going to Tulcea stay here6
good hotel a few km away from the city centre. If you have a car, it is not a problem. Room was clean and spaciuos. bed was large and comfy. There was a kettle in the room to boil hot water to make tea. I was allowed to make a quick breakfast in their kitchen. Friendly staff, easy checkin, good communication in English.
Clean house, tastefully decorated. Modern renovation. Nice bathroom facility - big bathtub and big shower. Smart TV connected to Netflix, PrimeVideo, etc.
Hotel-like details - towels, shower caps, toiletries...
Good location walking distance to river promenade.
Accommodating host.
We loved the facilities, host and location.
We were pleasantly surprised to find that facilities included an outdoor kitchen and terasse, beautiful garden, coffee making, access to a fridge.
Location was great as it was few minutes walk to the port for our Delta trip. Easy parking.
Spacious apartment with 4seperate rooms
Victor is very helpfull host, speaking very good English. He perfectly organized and safely drived a speed boat. I recommend him as english speaking tour guide that knows every lake in Dunabe delta.
A top class resort hotel , everything was excellent. Situated right on the beach, easy walk to old town. Lovely food, we ate all meals here, wonderful, helpful, friendly staff. Beautiful room with everything you can need. Quiet too.
It was good location for us as hotel is at the road outside of the town. Hotel has restorant and swimming pool. Good place to stop for one/two days when you are travelling. Room is clean. Parking is available on hotel territory.
Basic bedroom, we were there only to sleep, nothing exceptional to say about it. Owner was really nice and helpful, gave us contacts to do a boat trip on the Danube Delta, amazing experience. Good ratio price/quality.
If you're visiting Tulcea, I really recommend this apartment. Central location, clean, very helpful host who organized things we needed (e.g. a tool to lower the baby bed) late in the evening after our arrival.
Florian is very nice and his accommodations are appropriately cheap. He was there to meet us in person when we arrived. He set us up with a funky but economical delta tour. He speaks English. Location is good.
Great location right in front of the main docks for the Danube Delta transfer service. The rooms are big enough and comfy. Also great view and free parking during your stay. Breakfast was also good and fresh.
it's a quiet, clean and wonderful place to relax and pick up an accommodation when you arrive in Tulcea. The host is a kind person with whom you enjoy having a conversation.
The seventh flour restaurant has a nice litle view to Danube and some parts of the city.Brekfast is ok. The restaurant also has a good chef so the food is tasty.
