The vibe here is different in a subtle but definite way from Porto itself on the other side of the river. This is of course a very popular area where most of the Port lodges and many other attractions are found. The hilly winding streets are still remarkably charming and unspoilt. Walk or take the Metro just a short distance south however, and you will find a busy, tidy real-life neighbourhood with its own charm and cheaper eating & drinking options.

Beautiful river-side walk, if a few too many tourist traps (stalls selling very similar materials to every other street market in Porto). Easy access from airport by metro at less than a 10th the cost of a taxi, though if you are staying down by the river it's a long walk or a taxi (or cable car!) will be needed from metro stop. Great restaurants, and of course numerous Port Houses to visit.
I was there end Aug/early Sept and temperature was very comfortable. Only issue was fog / low cloud in the morning which impacted flight arrivals and early departures.

I loved being able to look at Porto as my view along with the river. I thought we would buy a transportation pass but we ended up walking almost all of the time. We took an occasional bolt (uber)and did take the tram and then a bus to Matosinhos enjoying a wonderful seafood meal with our daughter and son-in-law who were starting on their camino walk to Santiago. There were plenty of places to eat on the Gaia side and we found it easy to walk to the sights over in Porto that we were interested in. One day we had the best “pasteis de nata” at Manteigaria, and the Bolhao market tempts all visitors with unending variety of foods and drinks, that can be had while walking around the different stalls. We finished lunch at the “Confeitaria do Bolhao”, with an unusual empanada and a great tomato and sardine bruschetta. We had a port wine tasting at Churchills Port Winery and in the evening we climbed up to Miradouro da Serra do Pilar to watch the sunset and happened upon a concert from a Portuguese band called Blind Zero that sings in English.

Vila Nova de Gaia is quieter than Porto on the other side of the river. It is only a short walk to Porto but be beware that Porto is very hilly and it will be necessary to climb a hill either on the Gaia or Porto side to see much of the city.
Metro system is cheap, clean and easy to use . The taxi service provided via the Bolt app is superb and you can order an taxi to take you to anywhere in Porto for a very modest fee.

I loved the area.
I loved the area. Less touristic but very love and energetic!... and my hotel was just steps from the more touristic attractions and places. My favorite restaurant was there too Tempero d'Maria by the river. The skyliner was just across the street from my hotel ( Vincci Ponte de Ferro).

The area had a place to shop and food outlets and was within easy walking distance of Porto's main centre. One huge advantage is that, being at a higher level, when you walk across the bridge (or catch the metro across) to the North side of the river, you are almost at the top of Porto, which saves a long climb.
There are also interesting sights and sites in Vila Nova de Gaia itself, such as the monastery and the views over the Douro to Porto. The monastery was shut when we went but may be open later. Mostly we went further afield so I cannot comment on much that was there. The Jardim de Morro is worth a visit, especially if you like live music performers and good views.

I liked the family-run feel of the hotel, the friendly and correct interactions with the people running the hotel, it's location on the south bank of the river but somewhat removed from it, giving more quietude. The steep granite stairs continued outside, onto multiple terraced gardens with a view over Porto.
Excellent location of the hotel, surrounded by wine cellars and a beautiful view of the old Porto. The hotels have a stylish interior and are located on a quiet street. We are grateful that we chose this hotel.
I loved the location, the restaurants were close the city was a 20 minutes walk to Vila Nova de Gaia the second town to Porto city. All the little shops close to the apartment.
