It is a nice place to stay with spa facilities, ideal for a little escape.
Good breakfast. There is a restaurant, and the meals are ok, but a little expensive.
If you like tranquility and calm days I would recomend you to stay only from monday to friday, because in weekends the hotel and facilities are very crowdy, to much guests for me.
We've stayed from thrusday to saturday and the difference was huge, even the breakfast was very much enjoyable in friday than saturday.

I love Chaves, small ancient town which has a river going through it with its own Roman bridge going across it… wonderful restaurants, the food is amazing here in the north of Portugal! Amazing places to stay with fabulous Portuguese restaurants! You’re also close to one of the nicest wine regions in the world! If you drive go trough Régua up the Douro where the grapes are grown! Unbelievable gorgeous, truly stunning

The bridge that dates from Roman times and is normally shown...
The bridge that dates from Roman times and is normally shown in photos is the interesting bit of Chaves. The rest is tired and seems to have suffered economically. The last place we stayed was Guimares. I'd stay 2 days there and not stay in Chaves next time.
That said, apparently there are quite a lot of historical Catholic things here, but not my scene at all.

We really, really liked Chaves.
We really, really liked Chaves. We stayed in the Castelo Hotel which is superb, excellent room - with tea and coffee making facilities! We felt we got a lot of hotel for our money. Very clean and comfortable with excellent staff, helpful and friendly. The castle (museum admission price €1, well worth it just for the views from the top) and its immediate neighbourhood is close by and pleasant to stroll around. An easy walk down to the river brings you to the Roman bridge, a perfect place to sit in the sun and lose an afternoon over a beer or two.
Our first evening meal we had at Taska das Caldas and wished we’d spent our second evening there, too. It’s “characterful”, an “experience” but in a good way! Very friendly host greeted us with a white port, then, because we couldn’t decide on starters, brought lots of lovely taster sized portions. The mains were excellent. No room for dessert we just finished with coffee and were bombarded with shots of various águardentes. Didn’t half sleep well!
The only disappointment was wanting to walk round the park only to find it closed for works.

The city is amazing.
The city is amazing. It has grown so much since I last been there some 30 years ago. The thermae museum is for free and it's very informative, restaurants are abundant and serve great food. Bars ensure some nightlife and the river has many options of entertainment. The kid's park on the main square near the Tamega is of superb quality

Chaves is a very interesting and picturesque town.
Chaves is a very interesting and picturesque town. It has lots of nice, reasonably priced restaurants and bars. We found a nice restaurant just down the stone steps from the Roman bridge. The "house red" was excellent.
We had rented bikes and they were delivered to this hotel. Man at reception was very helpful and assisted us with moving the big boxes and showed us a spacious corridor, leading onto a courtyard, where we unpacked the bikes in comfort and without being hassled. This made such a difference in getting off to a good start on our holiday. Also there was safe parking in the garage for the bikes.
Close to castle, river and nice park.
Very good value for money. Good breakfast with choices.
Clean, comfortable room and bed.
parts of the hotel are definitely four star. located in buildings within the walls of the fort. It’s definitely atmospheric. The pool is large in the pool area very nice. breakfast is bountiful in the breakfast room large and airy. however, four-star hotels do not have incredibly cheap plastic wrapped paper cups in the bathroom and a old-fashioned tub shower with not a grab bar in sight. Additionally, in my room, the AC wasn’t working I was in a standard deadbolt I suspect more expensive rooms are nicer.
We arrived as a group of 6 bikers, and on check in advised to put the bikes right in front of the hotel entrance as the cctv cameras covered that area.Extremely helpful and accomadating staff.
The hotel is tastefully furnished, with a wonderful out side swimming pool, and also situated on the river Tamega, ideal for leisurely stroll's and sight seeing in the area.Highly reccomed.Would have liked to spend more than 1 night.Buffet breakfast amazing.
Situated just outside of Chavez and near the Spanish border, this is a perfect jumping-off point for journeys around northern Portugal, and seems to be a hub of activity around the town, especially the restaurant. The restaurant was lovely and had huge portions of regional cuisine. The staff is incredibly nice, and the proprietor is a genial host. Just a great slice of life in northern Portugal.
Chaves is a lovely town and we really enjoyed our stay there. Hotel Katia is well situated, near free car parking. The lady who runs it is friendly and welcoming. She was very good at speaking slowly and clearly so that we could understand (our Portuguese is limited). The breakfast was amazing - including beautiful fresh fruit, home made jams and delicious cakes.
Throught this message, the 9 Frenchie bikers would like to thank you for your welcome and your sympathy. Our trip on the National Route 2 in Portugal for 5200kms was fantastic, full of images and unforgettable moments thanks to you.
Each stage was like the course, friendly and welcoming!!!!
One word comes to mind: THANK YOU SO MUCH

We needed a one-night stop in Chaves and this suited us perfectly. Staff were very friendly and helpful. They didn’t speak much English but we managed to communicate. Everything was spotlessly clean and they accept dogs, which was important to us. Bed was comfy and water was hot. Breakfast was basic but adequate.
The hotel is just outside the old town. It is right on the river. There is free parking. The room was spacious and comfortable with views of the river and if we craned to the side we could see the castle. Breakfast was great with specialties from the region as well as the basics. Very good value.
Everything was comfortable and convenient at this hotel. There is free parking behind the building, cafes and restaurants nearby. The staff were efficient and friendly, even offering to help with luggage. I loved the antique fixtures and pink marble floors on the staircase. The price was great.
Fantastic hotel, with excellent staff. Very accommodating, great facilities and the room was just amazing! We had a private bathroom and a small balcony, the AC worked amazingly (which was a must with the heat) and everything was sparkly clean. We can't wait to come back! :)
Really fantastic for the price our bikes were just outside and very safe, Vanessa was fantastic telling us everything we needed to know. He breakfast was in a nearby hotel and was also really good. Would definitely book again and Chaves is a fantastic place.
Spacious room very clean with terrace and table and chairs - very peaceful . It is a mile or so outside the town of Chaves. The centre of Chaves has a great river with pleasant green areas and walkways along the river - well worth a visit.
An oasis just off the highway in a small village in farm country. Beautiful stone hotel, gorgeous pool and terraces, fantastic food, welcoming staff. We loved everything about it, could stay there for a week easily and happily.
Service/ staff friendly and helpful, room clean and meets essential needs, location the best to visit the town, a beautiful hotel, and a convenient breakfast both adults and kids can find their favorite items.
Professional and helpful staff. Everything in the hotel was like new. Comfortable bed. Great air conditioning. Instant hot water. Well insulated. Great choice for breakfast. Superb central location.
This place is a small well-decorated hotel, near the center of the city and the popular riverside area. You can walk from here to most of the city, the breakfast is also a highlight.
