Unique, arty, traditional and lively pretty much sums up the great mix that the island of Tromsø has to offer. The city is home to the unique Arctic Cathedral, an array of pubs, cafés and an energetic street culture.
If you’re planning a day of sightseeing be sure to visit Tromsø Museum, Polar Museum, the University Museum of Tromsø, Mack Brewery, and the Arctic Alpine Botanic Garden.
The city’s main square often holds a variety of markets and its streets are lined with colourful and old-style buildings and houses. Tromsø is one of the best places to view the amazing colours of the Northern Lights.
Nicknamed the ‘Gateway to the Arctic’ due to being a launching point for polar expeditions, Tromsø provides numerous activities such as hiking and kayaking during summer, and skiing and dog-sledding in winter, all in a backdrop of eye-catching scenery.
Tromsø is easily accessible from major cities such as Tallinn, Oslo and Helsinki and Tromsø Airport has direct flights to various European destinations. Check-out Booking.com for a selection apartments and hotels in Tromsø and throughout Norway.
Trips we booked from Tromso were all easy to locate.
Trips we booked from Tromso were all easy to locate.
Shops and restaurants in abundance, all within easy reach and super ice-cream places that made a good end to a meal out if desserts were a little on the expensive side.

We loved Tromso so much.
We loved Tromso so much. We went in May at just the beginning of the midnight sun. The sun never set which was something to get used to, but so beautiful. We were really lucky with the weather as the sun was shining down. We had 3 full days there. 2 of those days we booked with excursions which were great. Would definitely recommend booking them for most of your days. 1 day we didn't have major plans but we did book into a sauna and do the cable car. I would recommend only 1 day of easy going plans as to make the most out of the city, excursions are great. Every evening we looked at reviews for good restaurants and booked for dinner about 6pm. Lots of choices. I know Tromso is really popular in the winter for the Northern lights so technically this is their quiet time, but we loved it and would recommend you to consider going in the sun. 'Get your guide' is a great website to book activities! Also 'Polar adventure' company has such a nice crew so would definitely book anything with them.

Tromsø is a delightful city in a breathtaking location.
Tromsø is a delightful city in a breathtaking location. We went in May and enjoyed midnight sun over snowy hills. Local people were lovely, very friendly, excellent English. Cards accepted everywhere, didn't use any cash all week. Plenty to see and do, mostly within walking distance but we got cheap 24 bus passes and explored in all directions too. Tromsø billet app useful for cheap tickets. Tourist info staff very helpful. We had a fantastic fjord cruise on the Brim Explorer - highly recommended. Food excellent too, local cafes for lunch, enjoyed a particularly good Indian meal at the Indie Restaurant.

Tromso was okay, only small, not a lot to do, plenty souvenir shops, was nice for 3 nights but wouldn't go for any longer. We went on a boat on the fjords which was 4 hours, would have been better if had only been 2 hours, it was just mountains and water we found it to be boring, and it wasn't cheap, would we recommend, No.

Tromsø is breathtaking and definitely worth visiting, regardless of if you're chasing the polar lights, or just want to explore the city and the area during the day. The city is in close touch with nature and offers variety of different activities. The only thing I wouldn't recommend is going there during the Easter holidays (as I did), since a lot of stores, museums, restaurants, etc. tend to be closed.

Tromso is nice town with plenty of places to eat and drink.
Tromso is nice town with plenty of places to eat and drink. The restaurants offer a mixture of cuisine including local delicacies. There are a reasonable amount of shops offering local goods. It is an easy walk across the bridge to visit the Cable Car, definitely worth a visit to enjoy spectacular views. We arranged for a Northern Lights Tour which was fantastic. A comfortable, luxury coach drove us an hour outside of Tromso to an area with no light pollution, we had perfect weather so did not have to move on as the Northern Lights offered us the most wonderful light show for a four hour period. We were supplied with Hot Chocolate & cookies which kept us warm. The driver would have driven to another location if the weather had not been clear but on this occasion it was not necessary.
The breakfast was comprehensive and good food. As an English person travelled Ng having a good cup of tea in the morning is important to me and they had good tea :) but the food was really good in the morning. English and continental options available. Good service as well. The room was a very good size and clean with the staff being excellent. They were able to give advice about transportation, help with problems we were having and very friendly. The location was also very good all our excursions started around or at the hotel so that helped.
We loved everything about this hotel! Super friendly and helpful staff, we got a surprise free upgrade to a beautiful suite room, which had amazing views over the harbour, Fjellheisen and Sherpatrappa. We could simply watch northern lights from our massive windows! Breakfast was superb, too!
It was the best stay ever in Tromso (and we've been there 3 times, staying in other hotels.) Can't recommend highly enough!
Very friendly and welcoming staff, smiling and patient - regardless of the time of day or pressures!
Me and my girlfriend took the premium room
The room was phenomenal the view was amazing and actually we've got lucky and we saw the Northern Lights from our room window and also the staff are very friendly and help us with the tur location
Breakfast is also very good the location is perfect close to all the tours all the good restaurants and all the shopping centres I would really recommend to stay in this hotel for everyone hos is gonna visit Tromso
The gym is kinda cute not the best but it's fine
The house is approximately one hour drive from Tromsø airport, idyllic location close to the beach. 4 bedrooms were perfect for our group, since all could have their private bedroom. One bathroom on the second floor and one one the first floor made the routines easy. The kitchen is well equipped and we cooked all meals for the whole week there. The veranda outside the living room gives a nice view to the sea and in our case the Northern lights :)
We stayed in the standard twin bedroom. We loved the design and the cosiness of the room and the common areas. The beds were comfortable, and the bathroom was squeaky clean. The hotel is conveniently located close to supermarkets, bars and bus stops, including the airport bus stop. We also loved the self-check-in (it was our first time in Norway so we didn't know that could be a thing).
Good location and a price of 180 for a half board in Norway is fair. Room was good, a bit outdated furniture, had enough space, bathroom excellent. Few minutes from the centre, shops, bars, harbour. Parking is an option. Tromsø is beautiful city and I will come again, just not in this hotel.
Despite the room size is quite small, the facilities offered according to the price is really worth. They have nice guest kitchen, big dinning room, free tea, coffe and cookies all the time, fridge in the room. And the hotel staff was really kind! The location is perfect too!
Best breakfast in Norway! Room was comfy and clean. Great location and value!! Would stay again. No parking. Used the Fjellet public parking with no issues. Dropped our bags at the hotel then parked the car for $38 for 24 hours. Make sure to drive to Lyngen Alps!
This hotel is in a nice quiet location with easy to access the city centre either on foot (20 minutes) or by bus (less than 5 minutes). It's comfortable and there is a shared kitchen so you can self-cater and not spend as much (Norway is expensive!!).
Location was excellent, and we had an incredible view of the mountain from our apartment’s living room. On multiple evenings we also saw the northern lights directly from our window.
Hotel staff was always very friendly and helpful.
Very cosy and nice appartment! The view is just amazing, I even got to see the northern lights right from across the street.
The hosts were very helpful and always worried if I was comfortable enough.
Really nice experience!
This location was perfect to see the northern lights. We weren't able to see them in Tromso, but luckily we booked the cabin and were able to see them there. In addition to that the host Jonathan was super nice!
The location is perfect, close to the city center and the lake to see the northern lights.
the staff very nice and available for anything. Burger is nice as well !
nice atmosphere
Perfect for a short stay
Great location, had a waterfront room, excellent view. Nice option of breakfast, coffee/ cake and dinner included in price everyday. Especially in an expensive place like Norway, this is great value
The hotel is really close to the city centre and to the meeting points for the organized tours (silent whale watching, fjords, northern lights chase). The room is clean and warm.
