FAQs about hotels in Carcassonne

Out of a Fairytale

Most visitors to Carcassonne come here for one thing: to see its fairytale, UNESCO World Heritage-listed castle sitting majestically on a hill east of the city.

Spectacularly lit at night, this Cité is a restored medieval fortress with 52 towers, 2 outer walls covering almost 2 miles, and a drawbridge providing access to a keep. Twice daily there are medieval jousting displays within the walls. This intriguing castle has enchanted so many that it has appeared in novels, films and even inspired a board game.

Some Carcassonne hotels, bars and restaurants can be found in the Cité but the majority are in the Ville Basse below. The stone Old Bridge, also lit at night, links it to the city center over the Aude River.

Central Carcassonne also has its own sights including a fine art museum and a cathedral with impressive stained-glass windows. But its best feature is the South of France way of life, with relaxed bars and sidewalk cafes, some serving the local speciality – cassoulet. Other slow-paced attractions include boat trips along the Canal du Midi and visiting villages like Minerve in the surrounding hills.

Served by national and low cost carriers, Carcassonne Airport is only 3 miles from the city center.

    Carcassonne is a UNESCO sight.

Carcassonne is a UNESCO sight. It is the biggest fortified medieval city of its kind in Europe. It is worth your while to come and walk the narrow cobbled stone streets of the city. ....the stone walls....the old signs.....etc. It is filled with tourist shops.....and many restaurants. Try the traditional "cassoulet"! The streets are winding. They are not straight! So, be adventurous. Know that you will get lost at one point! Don't be disheartened.....you'll quickly find yourself. ;) We took the time to walk in the evening outside the walls. We took some epic photos of the sun setting on the fortified city. Set aside one day for this unique experience. :)

Seeing the medieval city (Cite de Carcassonne) was a bucket...

Seeing the medieval city (Cite de Carcassonne) was a bucket list item for me. I don't regret going, but there's not much else to recommend in the way of tourist attractions in Carcassonne. Could have been a weekend stop rather than the whole week we gave it. The Cite itself has wonderful architecture (not so accurately restored, we were told). The church was an unexpected highlight. The rest was lovely to look at, but full of tourist shops. If you weren't shopping, there wasn't much to do there. We stayed in a lovely updated apartment in the Bastide de Saint Louis, a very old part of the city. Walking distance to the Cite and everything in the town. Interesting, lots of lovely old buildings. We saw the Canal du Midi on one of the boat tours available near the train station. Not recommended. There wasn't much to see - no scenic countryside because the vegetation that grows along the canal blocks most of the chance for any view. The highlight of the trip was a stop at a spot where we could take photos of the Cite de Carcassonne. To be fair, you could see it, in the distance. With a bunch of not so scenic buildings and not so appealing vegetation in the foreground. And we were only there for a very brief time. The price of the tour was low, so at least it was a pleasant boat ride.

The old city has so much charm and atmosphere in abundance with lovely restaurants and shops. The views from the ramparts across the whole area were amazing. The castle is spectacular and well worth visiting We had a lovely trip on the Canal du Midi, the weather was beautiful and it was so relaxing. There is plenty to see and enjoy in Carcassonne. The medieval citadel is well worth a visit, and tour around...

The medieval citadel is well worth a visit, and tour around the Chateau Comtal, however spolit with the array of shops selling souvenirs. We visited first May Bank Holiday week, and found many restaurants closed, and the menus limited to the same at each restaurant. The town has a square with restaurants, supermarket and cafes, again with limited menus. Canal du Midi, towpath was over grown and a lot of homeless people sitting around drinking. The boat trips were not running at this time. The river was pretty but limited to walking along as there is no path..

Poor trip reconnaisance on my part, thinking I could...

Poor trip reconnaisance on my part, thinking I could navigate by car in the city center of a medieval town. Six inches of clearance on either side of our rental car as we cautiously crept down the one way streets. No parking except in an underground garage ten minutes walk away. The castle is a twenty minute walk from city center, the last 1/4 mile uphill. Great to view the citadel walls and turrets from a distance. Inside the walls, hard to tell which cobblestones and masonry were from the middle ages, and which were 25 year old patches. Lots of ticky-tacky souvenir shops, some appealing bistros/restaurants, a fabulous 800 year old church, and lots and lots of visitors in late April. Can’t imagine what it will be like this summer.

Best continental breakfast ever in a quiet green courtyard. Home made yoghurt, jam and fresh melon etc. Our host Jean Luc was an extremely friendly and helpful host, the place was lovely and clean and our guest bedroom had a king size bed, great mattress and with a super bathroom. The location was great for easy walk to town centre, longer walk to the old medieval city and taxi to/from airport around 10 Euro. There is great public transport system (go to ATAC office for timetables etc) around town and to the old city so no need for a car

The staff were so good. They literally could not do enough for you. This hotel represents excellent value for money and is only a short distance from the medieval city. A great option for those with their feet under them but do take note, it is difficult to get a taxi to take you the short trip from the attractions to this hotel. We had a family member with us who has mobility issues and this was as an issue from us. Once you are in the hotel, the staff can wrangle a taxi for you and do so with pleasure.

The location of the hotel is perfect, right beside the medieval castle. The grounds of the hotel were well-maintained and the gardens were great to sit around in and have a drink. Also, the parking was very handy, right beside the hotel.

Honestly this hotel was just perfect. It had the small boutique feel, friendly staff, beautiful rooms, a fabulous pool, and all under the incredible view of the castle- couldn’t recommend it more, truly the photos do not do it justice!

If you’re looking for a family-friendly hotel to stay in Carcassonne, look no further. This hotel is excellent in every aspect. Located within the castle and the service is impeccable. I’d love the bar by the beautiful pool!

Best room ever! The views from this hotel beats the view from the famous bridge. Room size was on the smaller side but good enough for 2 for 2 nights. everything was clean and staff were super friendly and helpful.
