Most visitors to Carcassonne come here for one thing: to see its fairytale, UNESCO World Heritage-listed castle sitting majestically on a hill east of the city.
Spectacularly lit at night, this Cité is a restored medieval fortress with 52 towers, 2 outer walls covering almost 2 miles, and a drawbridge providing access to a keep. Twice daily there are medieval jousting displays within the walls. This intriguing castle has enchanted so many that it has appeared in novels, films and even inspired a board game.
Some Carcassonne hotels, bars and restaurants can be found in the Cité but the majority are in the Ville Basse below. The stone Old Bridge, also lit at night, links it to the city center over the Aude River.
Central Carcassonne also has its own sights including a fine art museum and a cathedral with impressive stained-glass windows. But its best feature is the South of France way of life, with relaxed bars and sidewalk cafes, some serving the local speciality – cassoulet. Other slow-paced attractions include boat trips along the Canal du Midi and visiting villages like Minerve in the surrounding hills.
Served by national and low cost carriers, Carcassonne Airport is only 3 miles from the city center.
Carcassonne is a UNESCO sight. It is the biggest fortified medieval city of its kind in Europe. It is worth your while to come and walk the narrow cobbled stone streets of the city. ....the stone walls....the old signs.....etc. It is filled with tourist shops.....and many restaurants. Try the traditional "cassoulet"! The streets are winding. They are not straight! So, be adventurous. Know that you will get lost at one point! Don't be disheartened.....you'll quickly find yourself. ;) We took the time to walk in the evening outside the walls. We took some epic photos of the sun setting on the fortified city. Set aside one day for this unique experience. :)

Seeing the medieval city (Cite de Carcassonne) was a bucket list item for me. I don't regret going, but there's not much else to recommend in the way of tourist attractions in Carcassonne. Could have been a weekend stop rather than the whole week we gave it. The Cite itself has wonderful architecture (not so accurately restored, we were told). The church was an unexpected highlight. The rest was lovely to look at, but full of tourist shops. If you weren't shopping, there wasn't much to do there.
We stayed in a lovely updated apartment in the Bastide de Saint Louis, a very old part of the city. Walking distance to the Cite and everything in the town. Interesting, lots of lovely old buildings.
We saw the Canal du Midi on one of the boat tours available near the train station. Not recommended. There wasn't much to see - no scenic countryside because the vegetation that grows along the canal blocks most of the chance for any view. The highlight of the trip was a stop at a spot where we could take photos of the Cite de Carcassonne. To be fair, you could see it, in the distance. With a bunch of not so scenic buildings and not so appealing vegetation in the foreground. And we were only there for a very brief time. The price of the tour was low, so at least it was a pleasant boat ride.

Visit to the walled city was great!
Visit to the walled city was great! Plenty of food choices and activity around the town square. Large art selection in the local museum. Carcassonne was recommended to us and I have no hesitation in doing the same.

The medieval citadel is well worth a visit, and tour around the Chateau Comtal, however spolit with the array of shops selling souvenirs. We visited first May Bank Holiday week, and found many restaurants closed, and the menus limited to the same at each restaurant. The town has a square with restaurants, supermarket and cafes, again with limited menus.
Canal du Midi, towpath was over grown and a lot of homeless people sitting around drinking. The boat trips were not running at this time. The river was pretty but limited to walking along as there is no path..

Poor trip reconnaisance on my part, thinking I could...
Poor trip reconnaisance on my part, thinking I could navigate by car in the city center of a medieval town. Six inches of clearance on either side of our rental car as we cautiously crept down the one way streets. No parking except in an underground garage ten minutes walk away.
The castle is a twenty minute walk from city center, the last 1/4 mile uphill. Great to view the citadel walls and turrets from a distance. Inside the walls, hard to tell which cobblestones and masonry were from the middle ages, and which were 25 year old patches. Lots of ticky-tacky souvenir shops, some appealing bistros/restaurants, a fabulous 800 year old church, and lots and lots of visitors in late April. Can’t imagine what it will be like this summer.
I cannot more highly recommend this little hotel. The location is a stones throw from the castle and the old city. The host was extremely helpful and knowledgeable, he mapped out great restaurants, and the best routes to walk the city. Breakfast was ample and filling. The room was very clean and the perfect size for us. I will definitely stay here again, and recommend to my friends and family.
The location of this hotel and the view is outstanding, probably one of the best, if not the best, view you can get of the medieval city. Parking is paid for but close by and not that expensive which is good. Breakfast was tasty and a reasonable selection but as others have said there just wasn't enough of it, seems they aren't prepared for the number of guests.
Lovely spacious home with grand shared spaces like the salon and outdoor patio. Modernized for comfort while maintaining its old-world charm. Awesome shower, comfortable king-sized bed, luxury quality sheets and towels and the best breakfast in France. Hosts very helpful and a huge parking lot directly in front of the property made getting in and out practical.
The hotel met all of our needs. Situated between the Cite (old town) and the main town you have easy walking access to both, plus the bars and restaurants right outside were lovely too. The room had everything we needed including a TV and, despite being on the street side, was quiet. The staff were helpful, friendly and lovely.
The location of this property is excellent, only a short walk from the medieval city. The room was comfortable and clean, the air conditioning working very well. There was a separate balcony to use for everybody, and a small but very nice pool with sunbeds available. Breakfast was served between 8 and 10 a.m. outdoors.
Fantastic location in the middle the old city of Carcassonne. Great (glutenfree) breakfast. Kind and helpful staff, that takes pride in the hotel. Secure parking and seamless shuttle service.
Tip: get out before breakfast for a quiet stroll around the medieval streets and along the inner walls of the city.
the location, the view of the castle especially at night, the roof top terrace with a million $ view, good breakfast. but by far the BEST are the lovely owners; St Michel and Catherine with their cat - the best ever. it’s a very charming hotel in charming Carcassonne!! I will stay here again for sure.
A comfortable and professionally managed hotel only 10 minutes walk from the station. Easy access to the centre of the old city. A clean room with basic facilities. A good base for a few days, although the rooms (and corridors) are not inviting and need to be overhauled.
The Hotel is near the main gate of the Medieval City in Carcassonne. Is a very nice Hotel and the rooms were great and clean. The pool is gorgeous and we stayed for four days enjoying the City and the surroundings. Breakfast was good and in general we had a good stay.
The hotel was convenient for the old town, medieval city and the station. Although situated on a busy intersection of road, it was quiet once inside. Room was clean, the bed was very comfortable, breakfast substantial and the owners were very helpful and friendly.
The location was excellent. Between the old town and the medieval city.
The apartment was clean and simply furnished although more than 4 people would be a push for sitting and dining comfortably.
Wifi was a bonus as was not listed as being available.
The location is perfect. Is is just a short walk to the medieval city. The little pool was clean and sunny and the bed was very comfy. The hotel bar had a good range of drinks. Although it is on a road the windows effectively block out the noise.

The location couldn’t be better! The view of the castle was spectacular and probably one of the best views in town. Carcassonne is a very walkable town and this hotel was very friendly and accommodating to me.
Very peaceful surroundings. The pool was superb, the location , probably the best in carcasonne. Just opposite the entrance to the medieval city. Would highly recommend. Staff all so friendly.
