We didn't feel safe in Tocopilla. We just stayed for one night and didn't like it at all. The town is full of truck drivers and many places look quite dodgy. I would recommend to do the drive from Iquique to Antofagasta in one day (along the cost) or stay in Pica for one night and drive through the desert (it's a bit boring, but the coast is also not worth seeing).
